Ken Howells Review

Ken Howells is a traditional independent bookmaker rather than a slick betting brand, and that shows in both good and bad ways. On the plus side, the licensing and ownership are transparent, the sportsbook carries the features racing punters expect (Best Odds Guaranteed, ante-post, forecasts, telephone and text betting) and the welcome offers are cashback-style rather than deposit-match bonuses with heavy wagering. The sports offer in particular has no wagering requirement on the free bet.

The weaker points are service and scale. Support is email only, there is no live chat, and Trustpilot sits at 2.4 out of 5 from a small number of reviews, most of them one-star. Withdrawals can take up to three business days to process and a 5% fee (minimum £3) can apply if you withdraw without turning over at least half of what you deposited.

Worth a look if you want a UK-regulated, sport-first bookmaker with old-school racing service and modest, low-strings offers. Less suitable if you expect fast withdrawals, live chat or a large casino you can compare on game count.

Ken Howells runs two separate new-customer offers, one for sports and one for casino. Both are cashback on your first day's losses, not deposit-match bonuses, and both need a code entered under "My Bonuses" in your account before you start.

Sports: 50% of first-day losses back as a free bet, up to £25 (code CASHBACK)

• Sports bets only; casino play does not count.
• Place at least three bets of £10 or more on separate events at evens (2.0) or bigger.
• You need to lose at least £10 on your first day to qualify. Your first day starts with your first deposit and runs to 23:59.
• The free bet is credited within 24 hours, must be used in full within seven days, and the stake is not returned with winnings.
• Maximum return from the free bet is £250. There is no wagering requirement.
• New customers aged 18 or over who registered after 18 October 2025; one offer per person, household, IP address and payment method.

Casino: 50% of first-day losses back as bonus money, up to £50 (code WELCOME2)

• Casino play only; sports bets do not count.
• Minimum £10 first-day losses to qualify; credited within 24 hours.
• Bonus money carries a 10x wagering requirement and must be used within seven days. Maximum return capped at £500.
• Game weighting for wagering: slots and scratch cards 100%, roulette, blackjack, poker and baccarat 10%, progressive slots 0%.
• New customers aged 18 or over who registered after 26 February 2026.

Neither offer states a minimum deposit or excludes any payment method, which is unusual. Because both are loss-based, you get nothing back if you win on day one, so do not chase losses to trigger them.

Other regular promotions at the time of review included Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish racing (bets after 10am, uplift capped at £100 per bet), Double Result on UK and Irish racing, a football "Sub On Carry On" offer and network casino promotions from Pragmatic Play and Wazdan. 18+. The sportsbook is the heart of the product. Horse racing and greyhounds sit at the top of the menu, followed by football, tennis and basketball, with cricket, golf, darts, American football, rugby union and league, ice hockey, baseball, boxing and motorsport further down, plus political and entertainment specials.

Racing punters get the features an on-course bookmaker is expected to offer: Best Odds Guaranteed, ante-post markets, forecasts and tricasts, each-way and place betting, and a Double Result concession on UK and Irish racing. Across sports you also get in-play betting, cash out, bet builder markets and live streaming on selected events. The minimum stake online is 10p unless a market says otherwise.

Ken Howells also keeps its old-school channels. Telephone betting runs on 01269 597844 and a text-betting service ("Messagebet") on 07840 546255, both open 9am to 10pm daily, with a £50 minimum stake and their own rules. These are for placing bets, not for customer service.

We did not run a time-stamped odds comparison for this review, so we do not make a claim about margins. Best Odds Guaranteed on racing is the main pricing concession.

The casino and live casino lobbies run on EveryMatrix, the platform Ken Howells moved to in 2025, and are only shown to players in Great Britain. Promotions on the site at the time of review pointed to Pragmatic Play and Wazdan titles, and the app description lists casino, live casino and virtuals.

The casino is clearly the secondary product here. The casino welcome offer is separate from the sports one, bonus wagering counts slots at 100% but table games at only 10%, and casino winnings are subject to the same £25,000 per day cap as sports. Treat this as a bookmaker with a casino attached rather than a casino-first site.

Targetlocal Limited is the merchant of record, so card payments show under that name. Identity and age verification is required before you can withdraw, and the operator may ask for proof of address, the card used, bank statements, payslips, a tax return or a P60/P45 as part of source-of-funds or affordability checks. Customer funds are held to the Gambling Commission's basic level of protection, which means they are not separated from company money in the event of insolvency.

The turnover-based withdrawal fee is the term to remember. If you deposit, bet very little and then withdraw, you can lose 5% of the withdrawal.

Ken Howells has native apps on both platforms. The iOS app ("KenHowells", published by Targetlocal Ltd) is in the UK App Store, rated 18+, and covers sports, in-play, cash out, bet builder and casino. The Android app is on Google Play under the developer name Ken Howells and was updated at the end of August 2026; the listing is only visible from a UK storefront.

Neither store shows a meaningful rating yet because the apps are new and have few reviews, so we cannot compare app quality on that basis. The website is fully usable on mobile if you would rather not install anything.

Support is by email only, at support@kenhowells.com, from 10am to 8pm seven days a week. There is no live chat and no general customer-service phone line; the telephone numbers published by Ken Howells are for placing bets, not for account queries. The operator commits to responding to customers within 48 hours.

For a bookmaker of this size an email-only desk is not unusual, but it does mean a withdrawal or verification query raised on a Friday evening may not get a same-day answer. Keep your messages short, quote your username and attach any documents requested in one go.

Ken Howells has a written complaints procedure in its terms. Raise the complaint by email first; the operator commits to a final response within one month. If it is not resolved to your satisfaction within eight weeks and you have cooperated with the process, you can take it to the Independent Betting Adjudication Service (IBAS), the operator's named alternative dispute resolution body: ibas-uk.com, +44 (0)207 347 5883, ibasteam@ibas-uk.co.uk. The Gambling Commission's public register shows no regulatory action against Targetlocal Limited.

Keep bet slips, deposit and withdrawal records, emails and screenshots of any bonus terms from the start. IBAS will expect to see that you went through the operator's own process first.

The account area offers deposit limits that can be set daily, weekly or monthly (decreases apply immediately, increases only after the period ends plus a 24-hour cooling-off), casino loss limits, reality-check session reminders, time-outs and self-exclusion. Ken Howells is a GAMSTOP member, so a national self-exclusion covers this site too. The safer-gambling page also points to GamCare, BeGambleAware, the National Gambling Helpline on 0808 8020 133 and blocking software such as GamBlock.

One thing to be aware of: the terms and the safer-gambling page give different maximum lengths for time-outs (six weeks in the terms, six months on the page) and for self-exclusion (indefinite in the terms, five years on the page). Ken Howells has a claimed Trustpilot profile with a TrustScore of 2.4 out of 5 ("Poor") from 24 reviews at the time of writing, all posted in the last 12 months. Around two thirds are one-star and a fifth are five-star, with very little in between. The operator replies to 82% of negative reviews, typically within a week, and Trustpilot notes no history of soliciting reviews.

Twenty-four reviews is a small sample for a brand that only went online in 2025, so read the individual reviews rather than the headline score, and look for repeated themes around verification, withdrawal timing and account restrictions. Neither app store has enough ratings to show a score.

Ken Howells is a trading name of Targetlocal Limited (company number 02662814), a private company incorporated in November 1991 with its registered office in Killay, Swansea. Kenneth Grant Howells has been a director since 1992 and is the majority shareholder, with Joanne Howells holding a significant stake. The business describes itself as a third-generation family bookmaker founded in 1963 in Ammanford, South Wales, where its licensed betting shop still trades at 65 Wind Street. It also stands on course at Ffos Las, Hereford, Bath and Cheltenham, and co-sponsored a race at Ffos Las in 2025.

The Gambling Commission licence (account 422) covers non-remote betting since January 2009, remote real-event betting since July 2023 and both remote virtual betting and remote casino since July 2024. The licensed domains are kenhowells.com and messagebets.com / messagebet.co.uk, the latter being the telephone and text-betting service rather than a separate brand. Ken Howells has no sister betting or casino sites.
